BUKIT MERTAJAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today defended his action in speaking out against corruption.
He said he was aware that people had been condemning him in social media.
"I know there are comments in social media like 'Anwar likes to play with numbers'.
"I seldom want to answer to these but I want to say here that any investigation into corrupt practices is for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to undertake.
"But believe me, in my current position, I will not issue baseless statements," he said in his speech at the kenduri rakyat held at Galeri Pejuang, Cherok Tok Kun here tonight.
This is a homecoming for Anwar after being sworn in as the country's 10th prime minister on Nov 24, last year.
Cherok Tok Kun holds a special place in his heart as this is where he grew up.
Elaborating, Anwar said the people should not defend abuse of power and corruption which had brought hardship to the people.
"How is it possible for a minister to have billions in wealth and properties here and there?
"Take for example, flood mitigation projects. We managed to save RM1.8 billion when we came into power. Then, there was the money during the Movements Control Order (MCO). It was during emergency and no tenders were called.
"This is not acceptable," he added.
Anwar said as the Finance Minister, he had seen the files.
"There are people who asked 'Anwar, if there are wrongdoings, why not prosecute?
"Prosecution is not my job. Don't challenge me," he said.
