MELAKA: A woman's swift action saved the life of a man who was believed to have suffered a heart attack during a badminton match in Durian Daun, here, yesterday.
Kristil Tan Ai Teng, 55, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
She said the incident happened about 9pm during the veteran men's doubles quarter-finals.
The player was a 55-year-old man who represented the Kota Baru Institute of Teacher Education (IPG).
Kristil, who was on duty as the technical director of the badminton event, held in conjunction with the Inter-Staff Games Carnival of the Malaysian IPG, said she heard cries for help coming from the side of the court.
"I ran towards the man and saw him collapsing while leaning against a wall. He was asking for permission to take a break from the game.
"I sensed that he was having a heart attack so I immediately performed CPR on him and was helped by a student, who was also a volunteer on duty, to fetch the automated external defibrillator (AED) from my car," she said when contacted by Bernama today.
Kristil, who is also the Head of Melaka Tengah St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) said another staff from IPG Ipoh also helped to perform CPR on the man while they wait for the ambulance to arrive.
The lecturer of the Co-Curriculum Unit at IPG Durian Daun said she was glad to be able to help the man, who is reported to be in a stable condition.
"I feel that people should learn first aid to help those in similar situation," she said.
"I also hope more people will learn the basic techniques of CPR and how to use the AED or attend the free courses provided by SJAM to increase their knowledge on how to save lives." she added. -- BERNAMA
