Netizens query app security with move to do away with physical copy of road tax, driving licence

KUALA LUMPUR: The government's move to do away with the physical copy of the driving licence and motor vehicle licence (commonly referred to as road tax) has received brickbats from netizens.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke, in explaining the move, had said today that this was because the two licences would be made available on a digital platform via the MyJPJ application.

"Is it safe ? Data from government app is mostly leaked," he said in his Twitter posting.

ي @Ftnazhr asked as to what would be the outcome if the motorcycle was in one person's name but someone else was riding the two-wheeler .

"If you want to check through apps, the road tax is registered in our name, right, so how do you want to check the road tax if someone else is bringing it? Do you not understand this question?" he said in his Twitter posting.

ulfah born skinny, bish @ulfxh_f asked: "How ye? Ayah saya tak pernah register pon."

Loke said the initiative comes under Section 20 of the Act Road Transport 1987 (Act 333) where "every road tax shall be affixed and displayed on the vehicle in question", and will no longer be enforced for the category of owners under the first phase of the initiative.

He said an exception will be gazetted under the authority given to the Transport Ministry under Section 127 (1) (b) of the Transport Act. Loke said drivers and vehicle owners who are not ready to move into the digital platform can still use the physical road tax and driving licence.
