KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook assured motorists that it was not mandatory to download the MyJPJ mobile application nor do they need to keep a digital copy of their roadtax or driver's licence in hand.
In a Facebook post on Friday, he said the enforcement officers can confirm the status of the roadtax and the driver's licence through their own gadgets.
He was responding to frequently asked questions by the public following the Road Transport Department (RTD)'s move towards digitalisation which allowed private vehicle owners to no longer display their physical copy of their driving licence and road tax as it can be accessed online.
He also reassured the public they will not be issued with summonses should they fail to provide a digital copy of their road tax or licence to the officers.
Loke said the digital road tax can be printed on paper and kept in the car if the car is not driven by the owner.
"However, if you can't show proof, it's not a mistake... the enforcement will check the details in their gadgets.
"Don't worry, digital format is not mandatory. You can still get a road tax sticker and a physical licence from RTD if necessary," he said.
Loke said the application and website was currently experiencing high traffic.
"I know there are many more questions from people. We will try to give as clear an explanation as possible.
"I realise that in any process of change, it will take time to adapt. There are parties who will not agree with the change.
"I respect all views and will try to manage change as best I can," he said, adding that the ministry will work to fix any weaknesses that arise.
Earlier today, Loke announced that private vehicle owners will no longer need to display their road tax on the windscreen or carry a physical copy of their driving licence.
He said this was because the two will be made available in a digital version via the Road Transport Department (RTD) public portal (https://public.jpj.gov.my) or mobile application MyJPJ which can be downloaded from the App Store, Play Store or Huawei App Gallery.
He said the move was part of the ministry's efforts to digitise services offered by the RTD.
