KUALA LUMPUR: Roti canai, the Malaysian breakfast of champions, has been recognised as the world's second best street food.
This is according to TasteAtlas, which released the rankings of the Top 50 "Best Street Foods in the World" on its Twitter page on Feb 18.
TasteAtlas is an experiential travel guide for traditional food that collates authentic recipes, food critic reviews, and research articles about popular ingredients and dishes.
Roti canai, a pan-fried flatbread that is popular in Malaysia, is made with flour, water, eggs and fat. The dough is folded several times to create layers, resulting in a soft, fluffy texture on the inside and a crispy outer layer.
Guotie from China came in first place. The pan-fried variety of the Chinese jiaozi dumpling, is a Northern Chinese dumpling typically filled with minced pork, Chinese cabbage, scallions, ginger, rice wine, and sesame seed oil.
Coming in third is Spain's espetos, followed by tacos, the national dish of Mexico, and another Mexican favourite, carnitas, a dish made from pork that is braised, roasted or slow-cooked in its own fat for a long time until it is fully tender and succulent.
Japanese kaarage was ranked sixth.
Karaage is a Japanese frying technique that is often used to prepare chicken. The chicken is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, sake and sugar, then coated with arrowroot starch and deep-fried.
Popular Vietnamese bánh mi came in seventh place, followed by peirogi, a stuffed dumpling from Poland, and esquites, a Mexican street food that is typically consumed as a snack on the go.
It is made with mature corn kernels, epazote and salt.
Cochinita pibil, a Mexican pork dish originating from Yucatan grabbed the 10th spot.
Other popular favourites on the list are bubur ayam (chicken porridge), doner kebab, shawarma, and dosa.
Classified as Indonesia's street food, bubur ayam was ranked 13. Other Indonesian favourites are tempeh mendoan (14th place), pempek (37th), pisang goreng (40th) and serabi (41st).
