KUALA LUMPUR: The government does not intend to rush tabling of the recently postponed National Climate Change Bill.
Via Twitter last night, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said that though it is important to have such legislation in place, he said that having a bill for the sake of a bill is deemed pointless.
"We want a bill that is not toothless, that is comprehensive and will be truly impactful.
"We do not want to rush legislation. Without haste; without rest," he said in his official Twitter page.
He quoted a Tweet by @climateaidil who questioned the up to three year delay to develop the bill.
In September last year, former Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had said that the bill was initially expected to have been completed by the end of last year.
However, Nik Nazmi clarified to the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that the climate change bill would not be tabled in Parliament this year, and that it would take another two to three years to be developed.
He had also said that the ministry was in the early stages of developing the legislation.
He also said the bill seeks to adopt a whole nation approach and that the ministry will hold engagements with relevant stakeholders.
