7 states have anti-party hopping law so far - Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven states have enforced the anti-party hopping law, following the amendments of their respective constitutions.

Minister in the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (Law and Institutional Reform) said the states were Selangor, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Sarawak.

"Constitution (Amendment) (No.3) 2022, which prohibits members of the Dewan Rakyat to switch parties was gazetted on Sept 6, 2022 and in force from Oct 5, 2022.

"Section 6 of the Act provides an avenue for the state governments or state legislative assemblies to implement party-hopping prohibition on elected representatives through the amendment to the state constitution, subject to consent of the ruler or Yang di-Pertua Negeri," she said in a parliamentary written reply to a question from Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang).
