SEGAMAT: Work on flood mitigation projects worth RM600 million or more will begin in June.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government decided to expedite the projects to avoid a recurrence of flood disasters.
"If we don't do anything serious, it will happen again. The flood is not the first one, it has been many years and there have been two major floods here.
"Therefore, we decided that projects worth RM600 million or more will be expedited.
"The projects were postponed previously because we did not want leakages or theft from allocations for the people.
"We need to speed up the tender. All approved flood mitigation projects must be implemented this June. They cannot be delayed any longer," he told a press conference at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kampung Tengah, here, today.
The school is doubling as a flood relief centre.
The number of flood victims in Johor increased to 44,860 up to 8am. Batu Pahat is the worst-affected district.
