Kedah State Assembly: Stop debates on staking claim over Penang, PH rep tells fellow lawmakers

ALOR STAR: An opposition assemblyman today urged the state lawmakers to refrain from debating staking a claim over Penang at State Legislative Assembly sessions.

Asmirul Anuar Aris (Pakatan Harapan-Kubang Rotan) said instead, the elected representatives should focus on more important issues such as the people's welfare.

He pointed out that while the history of the neighbouring states during the British colonial era may be subject to interpretation, Penang's status under the Federal Constitution should be respected.

"In reference to the Federal Constitution, I would like to draw attention to the federal list and concurrent list, which clearly outline the powers and responsibilities of the federal and state governments. Article 74 of the Constitution outlines the rights of state governments.

"The history is up for interpretation. However, it was invalidated after the formation of the Federation of Malaya and through the enactment of the Federal Constitution, via the provision that I have mentioned.

"It is counterproductive (to debate the issue). We should be discussing more important issues such as the welfare of the people," he said when debating the motion of appreciation for the Sultan of Kedah's royal address at the opening of the state assembly meeting on Sunday.

Article 74 of the Federal Constitution states the recognition of the autonomy of state governments in certain matters, but also places limits on their powers in areas where the federal government has authority.

Asmirul also urged the state and federal governments to maintain a harmonious relationship to ensure development.

"By avoiding excessively aggressive political statements and maintaining professionalism, the strained relationship between the state and federal governments can be mended," he said.

On March 7, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed concerns over remarks made by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who had cast doubts about the sovereignty of Penang.

Sanusi was reminded by Chow that if he didn't use caution when discussing Penang's sovereignty, he might face legal consequences under the Sedition Act.
