PJ MP demands answer from MBPJ's Integrity Unit over assault on elderly man

KUALA LUMPUR: Petaling Jaya member of parliament Lee Chean Chung has served a letter to the Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) Integrity Unit demanding an explanation on the case of an elderly man allegedly roughened up by enforcement officers.

Lee said the letter also asked MBPJ to explain its standard operating procedure (SOP) on dog catching operations.

He said the alleged assault by enforcement officers involving the elderly man took place at Jalan 18/17, Taman Kanagapuram.

"If there are SOPs, what are they? What are the protocols that the MBPJ uses when conducting dog catching operations. This includes the procedures of its officers involved in the particular operation.

"We hope a detailed investigation will be conducted by the unit and we hope the situation will not recur in the future," said Lee.

A MBPJ officer told the New Straits Times that it had launched an internal investigation against its enforcement officers after they were seen roughing up the elderly man during the operation in a viral video.

In one of the videos, the group of uniformed council officers could be seen hitting the elderly man who was trying to protect his dogs from being captured with dog-catching iron rods.

Facebook user, Rekha Morgan, shared her account of the incident along with videos and pictures.

She claimed to know the elderly man and his dogs for years and described them as harmless and well-cared for.

Rekha also alleged that the officers forced the situation to escalate to violence and the elderly man was left with injuries to his jaw, cheek and a cut on his wrist.
