KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu member of parliament Chan Foong Hin chided Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) over the maintenance of Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).
He said KKIA had four chillers installed, but two had been out of commission since last year.
"There were only two chillers left to sustain the cooling system for the entire airport. It was fine back then, given the low passenger rate due to the Covid-19 outbreak which put a halt to air travel. However, since last week, one of the two remaining chillers also broke down."
Chan, who is also the Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister, said maintaining airport services was essential to give a good first impression of Kota Kinabalu to travellers.
"With the lifting of travelling restrictions and returning travellers using the airport, the entire building is getting hotter and hotter.
"Although the matter is not under my agriculture portfolio, I am nevertheless very concerned about the condition of the airport located next to my constituency."
Earlier, he paid a visit to KKIA and was greeted by airport senior manager Jeffrey Ramli.
He was briefed that MAHB was taking short-term measures by placing 47 coolers around KKIA.
Repair works for the chillers were expected to done by next week.
