Kuantan police warn against selling fireworks online ahead of Aidilfitri

KUANTAN: Police have reminded traders not to take advantage of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration next month to sell fireworks on online platforms.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said traders were prohibited from selling any type of fireworks online, including advertising the items on social media.

"Despite securing the permits, traders cannot sell firecrackers online, at housing units, food premises and selected business premises like petrol stations. Those who have secured a licence to sell have to ensure that the firecrackers are stored and sold at a safe location.

"Traders selling firecrackers at stalls must not sell other items including food.

"Selected retail businesses, such as 7-Eleven are allowed to sell one type of fireworks, namely Pop-Pop," he told reporters after attending a briefing with various agencies on a joint-operation to rescue the homeless, beggars and individuals with mental health issues who live on the streets here.

Wan Zahari said police had received 97 applications from traders in the state capital who expressed interest in selling firecrackers.

He said the department was still processing the applications and had yet to issue any permits to the eligible traders.

"Once approved, the licensed traders will be allowed to sell the fireworks and firecrackers 25 days before and five days after Aidilfitri. Traders can sell the items for about a month.

"Traders must follow the conditions set in the licence when selling firecrackers and only sell the types allowed by the Home Ministry to avoid stern action. Officers from the police licensing unit will conduct random inspections at selected premises," he said.
