PETALING JAYA: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is leaving it to the wisdom and discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide on the granting of a royal pardon to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said this was because the ultimate decision was in the hands of the king.
He said other parties cannot meddle in the matter although the King will be advised by the Pardons Board.
"I think the King has two powers of jurisdiction which we cannot intervene. The first is in terms of a pardon. Secondly, it is about the conferment of honours.
"Both matters are the ultimate rights of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Although there is a board, its quorum (board members), but the final decision (on the pardon for Najib) is the right of the King.
"On any issues related to Najib, I feel we should leave it to the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Let us leave it to His Majesty's wisdom," he said today.
Salahuddin said this after launching the Grab Malaysia Rahmah Basket contribution handover ceremony to Grab drivers and delivery riders here.
He was asked about Amanah's stance on whether it was appropriate for the board to grant a royal pardon to Najib.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is overseeing the Federal Territories Department portfolio, is part of the panel that will consider the royal pardon.
The Umno Supreme Council, on Friday, agreed to ask the King to consider granting a royal pardon to Najib, who is the former prime minister.
On March 31, the Federal Court dismissed Najib's application to review his conviction for misappropriating SRC International funds worth RM42 million.
It upheld the Aug 23 decision last year by a panel of judges chaired by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, of a 12-year jail and a RM210 million fine.
This meant that Najib would remain at the Kajang prison and his last chance for freedom was through a royal pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Najib is still facing three separate cases at the courts which are the 1Malaysia Development Berhad misappropriation case involving RM2.28 billion, SRC International money laundering case involving RM27 million and the RM6.6 billion International Petroleum Investment Company breach of trust case.
