Govt has not decided on e-hailing drivers' request for set floor price - Loke

PUTRAJAYA: The government has yet to decide on the E-Hailing Drivers Association's request for a floor price rate of its services.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in principal, the government did not have any plans to intervene.

"The association asked for a floor price and they have met me. But the ministry is still deliberating. There is no decision yet," he said after attending the National Logistics Task Force meeting today.

Loke said that drivers had asked for floor pricing while consumers wanted ceiling price and the ministry would study it with stakeholders.

"However, it will be best that there is no intervention from the government. Let the market determine the price of services," he said.

The best case scenario was a fair solution so that drivers and service providers would not suffer losses and consumers would not be burdened, he added.

"We understand that service providers and drivers are tied to operational costs and we want to protect their welfare as well," he said.

Last Sunday, Grab Drivers Malaysia Association deputy president Mohd Azril Ahmat said the e-hailing industry wanted the government to discuss with gig economy players to determine the ceiling price for the services of its drivers and riders.

He said there were over 100,000 full and part time e-hailing drivers as well as 60,000 p-hailing riders who were waiting for their demands to be answered.
