KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has dismissed claims that economy class flight tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau on April 20 have shot up to as high as RM3,138.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said he had reached out to Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) group chief executive officer Captain Izham Ismail, who clarified that there appeared to be a misunderstanding.
"Izham clarified that for that date, all economy flight tickets for the Kuala Lumpur - Tawau route are sold out. The only tickets left are those for business class.
"He also stressed that the aforementioned price was not for economy class, but instead business class seats. He said the prices were actually RM2,863.40 and not RM3,138," he said.
Loke was addressing claims by former transport minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who had earlier said that the economy flight tickets from Kuala Lumpur - Tawau on April 20 were exorbitantly priced at RM3,138.
Loke asked Wee to correct his statement and understand the difference between business class and economy class tickets.
"Nevertheless, I thank him for his concern over the issue of costly airfares as well as his views on the need for extra capacity," he said.
Loke said he would be holding a press conference tomorrow at the ministry's office to share more details on extra flights for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period.
