DPP: Senior police officer intentionally rammed vehicle into teen at high speed [WATCH]

IPOH: The prosecution will prove that senior police officer Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak crashed his vehicle into a teen at high speed without taking any evasive action.

Deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, in his opening statement on the first day of the trial at the High Court here today, said the accused's actions in colliding with Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie caused him to suffer fatal injuries.

"The permitted speed limit at the scene was only 30kph. The accused's act of colliding with the deceased was done with the intent to cause injury, and that injury was sufficient, in the usual course, to cause the death of the deceased.

"The accused collided with the deceased knowing that such an act was inherently dangerous and highly likely to cause death or an injury that could result in death.

"The accused committed this act without any justification for causing such a danger of death or harm," he said.

The prosecution team also includes Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, V. Suloshani, and Low Qin Hui.

Afzainizam added that the prosecution, in presenting evidence and proof, will rely on both direct and indirect evidence to be presented during the trial.

He said the prosecution will present evidence showing that the accused was driving a white Perodua Ativa to SMK Taman Jati Ipoh at the time of the incident.

"The deceased was riding a motorcycle and was a student at the same school. After leaving SMK Taman Jati, the accused exited and proceeded to follow and pursue the deceased.

"The accused followed and chased the deceased from the intersection of Jalan Taman Jati 1-Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah towards the area of Masjid Muhammad Al Fateh and the residential area of Taman Gerbang Meru Indah," he said.

He added that upon reaching the end of the road in Taman Gerbang Meru Indah, the accused and the deceased turned back and headed towards the same route, returning to the intersection of Jalan Taman Jati 1-Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah.

"After turning back, the accused continued to follow and chase the deceased. When the deceased arrived at the intersection of Jalan Taman Jati 1-Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah, the accused collided with the rear of the deceased's motorcycle.

"As a result of the collision, the deceased suffered injuries and died at the scene. The medical examination and post-mortem examination revealed that the deceased suffered fatal injuries due to the collision," he said.

Later, presiding High Court judge Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet and all those involved in the trial went down to the court compound to view the Perodua Ativa and Yamaha motorcycle, which are part of the evidence for the case.

Bhupindar had set the trial dates from today to Nov 8; Nov 11 to 15; Dec 2 to 6; Dec 9 to 13; Jan 6 to 10; and Jan 13 to 17.

Three witnesses testified today in the trial, and more than 10 items, including the car and motorcycle involved in the accident, are marked as exhibits.

The witnesses were Constable Muhammad Azif Daniel Abdul Ghaffar, who works at the Complaints Counter of the Ipoh Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department; Corporal Md Zahir Abdullah, who works as an evidence case storekeeper at the Ipoh Classified Crime Investigation Unit of the Prosecution/Legal Division (D5); and Assistant Superintendent Nur Fairuz Idris, a police forensics investigation officer.

The accused was represented by lawyers M. Athimulan, Datuk Meor Faridalathrash Wahid, and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman.

Meor Faridalathrash is a former Perak police chief, serving from November 2020 to March 31, last year.
