MetMalaysia issues thunderstorm warning for 10 states until 6pm

KUALA LUMPUR: Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to hit 10 states including Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak until 6pm today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department in a statement said the thunderstorms were also predicted to hit Perlis, Selangor, and Putrajaya.

According to the statement, the bad weather will hit several areas in Kedah comprising Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Sik, and Baling besides Hulu Perak, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang, and Muallim in Perak.

"In Kelantan, the areas affected are Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Pasir Puteh, and Kuala Krai, followed by Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, and Dungun in Terengganu.

"Meanwhile, the bad weather is also forecast to hit Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, and Pekan in Pahang and Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Baru in Johor.

"In Sarawak, it is predicted to involve areas in Sri Aman, Betong, (Betong and Saratok), Sarikei (Pakan, Sarikei, and Julau), Sibu (Kanowit and Selangau), Mukah (Tanjung Manis, Dalat, and Mukah), Kapit (Song), Bintulu, and Miri (Subis and Miri)," it said.

MetMalaysia added that a warning is issued when there are signs of a thunderstorm with rain intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that is close to or expected to occur for more than an hour.

"A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single issue."
