MetMalaysia issues thunderstorm warning for several states

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states today, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 6pm.

According to a Facebook post by MetMalaysia, the affected areas include parts of Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, and Johor, as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.

In Kedah, Baling and Kulim districts are under the warning, while in Perak, the areas of Larut, Matang, and Selama, Hulu Perak, and Kuala Kangsar are expected to experience severe weather.

Kelantan's Gua Musang, along with the entire state of Terengganu, are also on alert.

In Pahang, thunderstorms are anticipated in Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Kuantan, and Rompin districts.

The warning also extends to Selangor, with Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, and Sepang all expected to be affected.

Johor's districts of Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Bahru are also included in the alert.

In East Malaysia, areas in Sarawak including Kuching, Bau, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, and Miri, as well as Sabah's districts of Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Nabawan, Papar, and Tawau, are all expected to experience thunderstorms.

MetMalaysia stated that the warning was issued due to signs of thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour, either occurring or expected to last for more than an hour.

The short-term warning is valid for a maximum of six hours from the time of issuance.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information.
