ARAU: Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli today assured the people that there was sufficient water supply for the state in facing the El Nino phenomenon this June.
Shukri said he has instructed Syarikat Air Perlis (SAP) to take necessary preparations for the hot and dry spell.
"We have instructed SAP to take necessary preparations as we are bracing for a prolonged dry spell due to El Nino phenomenon this time around.
"Based on the briefing we received, the water supply is seen to be sufficient and insyaAllah we will be able to see through the dry spell," he told reporters after attending the Aidilfitri open house organised by Arau member of Parliament Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim here today.
Present were Pas spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin, Perlis State Legislative Assembly speaker Rusele Eizan and Perikatan Nasional assemblymen.
Commenting further, Shukri said the state government has also ordered SAP to identify areas expected to face water supply issues during the dry spell.
"SAP will be providing water barrels and deliver water supply to the areas concerned," he said.
Shukri added that the current shower spell also brought relief to the state as it helped to increase the water level at the Timah Tasoh Dam.
It was reported recently that a hot and dry spell is expected to hit by this June due to El Nino phenomenon.
The Apec Climate Center in Busan, Korea forecast that that the probability of the El Nino phenomenon occurring this June was over 90 percent.
For the record, Chuping in Padang Besar once recorded the highest and hottest temperature in Malaysia which was 40.1 degrees Celsius on April 9, 1998.
