KUALA LUMPUR: Four telecommunication companies will block URLs from being sent or received via short message service (SMS) to prevent online scams starting tomorrow (May 2).
A local daily reported that the four telcos are Maxis, Celcom, Digi and U-Mobile.
It is understood that the block would also apply to SMS requesting for users' personal details such as their name, identity card number, and bank account.
The Communications and Digital Ministry has issued the directive to all telcos through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to prevent consumers from becoming victims of online fraud.
Sin Chew Daily reported an MCMC source saying that the directive is currently not mandatory and the block will be implemented in stages.
Meanwhile, Maxis publicly announced the block on its website.
"MCMC has issued a directive to all telcos to block the sending and receiving of SMS with URL links.
"This is to prevent users from falling victims to online scams. This block is applicable for SMS send to or receive from local and international mobile numbers. The blocking of person-to-person SMS with URL link will take effect from May 2," it wrote.
Maxis said the directive will be carried out in phrases.
"It starts with SMS between individuals. The blocking of URL in SMS sent by business via short codes such as 6XXXX, 2XXXX and 1XXXX will be done later and specific notification to business users will also be done."
The company said consumers will not be charged if the SMS is blocked.
It added that consumers may still share links via social apps or instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook messenger and WeChat.
"Do not click on any links sent from unknown senders and to only login to your eWallet or online banking account via the official URL and mobile app."
