KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has been conferred with an honorary doctor of philosophy in leadership by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) here today.
The doctorate was presented by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who is also the university's constitutional head.
In his speech, the king expressed that the recognition from IIUM was not only an acknowledgement of his achievements, but also those of the people of Malaysia and their values.
"I have had my fair share of experience in leadership matters and its significance first-hand in my line of duty, particularly over the past five years. Leadership is an integral part of my responsibilities, and these responsibilities were shouldered not for personal rewards or recognition.
"Therefore, the conferral of this doctorate upon me is truly priceless, and I am truly privileged," he said at the 40th IIUM anniversary commemorative convocation.
Al-Sultan Abdullah said in recent years since ascending the throne, he had come to realise the crucial role leadership played in uniting and propelling the nation forward, as well as to seize opportunities and foster prosperity as a nation. It was vital, he added, to always remember that leadership was intrinsically linked to the people.
"Without the people, there is no leadership. As we say in Malay, 'tiada rakyat, tiada pemimpin'. As the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, my unwavering devotion to serving the people and promoting their welfare has always been my top priority.
"I am constantly aware of their struggles and hardships, and I empathise with their plight while encouraging their aspirations for success."
He said a leader must always prioritise the needs of the people above their own and lead by example, besides striving to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
"This principle has guided me during my tenure as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of our great nation," he added.
Al-Sultan Abdullah also said it was also paramount for IIUM to remain true to its name and mission in driving the ummah forward. He said the university's tagline, "Leading The Way", was a noble mission befitting its status as an international Islamic institution.
"Islam has guided humanity towards a new civilisation, illuminating lives across borders. With these words, I once again express my heartfelt gratitude to the university for bestowing this honour upon me.
"I deeply value this recognition and pledge to continue contributing to my people and our beloved country."
His Majesty also reminded graduates that education was more than acquiring degrees and certifications. It was also about cultivating an inquisitive mind, embracing diversity and nurturing a sense of responsibility towards society.
Graduates were the lifeblood of any educational institution, he said, adding that they had the power to shape the world for the better.
"I urge you to embrace that responsibility wholeheartedly. I am confident that you will become the future leaders and architects of your respective nations. I encourage you to aim high and utilise the knowledge you have acquired to reach for the stars. Congratulations on your graduation, and I extend my best wishes to each one of you as you embark on your future endeavours," he added.
Earlier, Tunku Azizah expressed her utmost appreciation to her husband on behalf of IIUM for accepting the honorary doctorate in leadership.
