PUTRAJAYA: The remains of the Malaysian Everest 2023 (ME 2023) climber Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub are expected to be brought down from the mountain to a safe area tomorrow morning before heading to Kathmandu, Nepal.
ME2023 mission chief Azim Afif Ishak, 33, said six mountain rangers were already at the peak of Camp Four to bring down the remains of the 56-year-old.
He said the body will be brought down to a safe area to facilitate the helicopter to carry out a 'long line rescue' to bring the body to Kathmandu for the post-mortem process.
"The Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu is in touch with the parties there to receive the remains," he said when contacted today.
Azim Afif said that the weather was quite cloudy and snowy at the moment but hoped it would improve tomorrow to make it easier to bring down the body.
Awang Askandar died yesterday during ME 2023 mission while another climber, Muhammad Hawari Hashim, 33, who is hearing impaired, is missing.
The Kedah Civil Defence Force head died after falling at an altitude of 8,000 meters above sea level while climbing.
Meanwhile, The Himalayan Times (THT), today reported that another climber died there, making 10 deaths reported so far.
Asian Trekking managing director Dawa Steven Sherpa, reportedly said that the climber who died was Jason Bernard Kennison, 40, from Australia.
THT also reported that Muhammad Hawari is one of the two climbers who are still missing, including a Singaporean climber known as Shrinivas Sainis Dattatraya.
