KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry raided 11 Swatch brand watch boutiques in several states and confiscated watches from its rainbow-themed collection, which is often associated with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
According to TheEdge Malaysia, the two-day raid on May 13 and 14 was conducted at Swatch boutiques located in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, One Utama, Sunway Pyramid, Setia City Mall, Mid Valley Megamall, Southkey, Sunway Putra Mall, Sogo KL, Queensbay, Fahrenheit 88 and Suria Sabah.
Five more boutiques were issued a warning, namely in Kuala Terengganu City Centre, AEON Kota Baru, Aman Central Kedah, City Square and Viva City Kuching.
Swatch Group chief executive officer Nick Hayek Jr told the business portal that he was surprised and disappointed by the seizure.
He said that the company supported the diversity and innovation that was highlighted.
"Swatch is proud to be the canvas on the hands of our brand's watch wearers, which includes a wide variety of individuals around the world as well as the employees who work with us.
"This brand is in demand because of the creativity and the mix of colours that decorate the quality of Swiss-made watches.
"We do not believe that a collection of watches that use rainbow colours with messages of peace and love can harm others.
"On the contrary, Swatch always promotes a positive message related to joy in life. This message is not political.
"In this case, there is a question mark whether the Enforcement and Control Division from Home Ministry will 'confiscate' the rainbow that appears naturally in the sky," said Nick in a statement, as quoted by the portal.
Nick said that the watch brand has long been known for its variety of colours and designs that aim to celebrate the diversity of individuals from various walks of life.
He also hoped that the confiscated watches would be returned.
