KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) graduate Carol Abbey Gail of Papar district is the new State Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen).
Clad in Papar traditional clothing - 'Sia do Binokian', she took over title from last year's reigning queen, Frenerietta Sobitun.
The 24-year-old brought home RM12,000 cash, a RM2,500 crown and other sponsored items.
Present to crown the new Unduk Ngadau was the Sabah Head of State's wife Toh Puan Norlida R.M Jasni, and Sabah Chief Minister's wife Datuk Seri Juliah Salag.
Carol from Kg. Balailait, Papar wowed the judges on stage at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Hongkod Koisaan, Penampang here, when replying to two questions fluently in Kadazan Papar language during the question and answer session.
Meanwhile, the second spot went to Calby Floresa Dolinting representing Kota Marudu, while Clerice Olvia Augustine @ Justin representing Tambunan took the third place.
They also took home cash RM10,000 and RM8, 000 respectively, and other sponsored items.
In fourth place was Galedine Lind Mosuyun representing Penampang, the fifth place went to Florina Wileh from Tuaran, the sixth to Melni Dhial representing Kiulu, and the seventh to Rannysa Rachel Lee from Tamparuli.
Fifty Kadazandusun beauties from around Sabah and Kadazan KDCA branches participated in this year's competition.
The Unduk Ngadau pageant is one of the Kaamatan highlights, which celebrates Huminodun, a maiden who was sacrificed by her father, Kinoingan to save the people from famine to bring about a bountiful harvest.
As the new Unduk Ngadau, Carol will be representing Sabah in numerous social and cultural programmes to promote its cultures, among other things.
Speaking to reporters, Carol, who has a degree in financial economics, said she didn't expect to win but was elated that she could make her district proud.
She also dedicated her win to her family, her district and those who supported her throughout the competition.
"This is very meaningful. It is unexpected but meant a lot to me," said the second child of three siblings.
She also vowed to fulfil her responsibility and fully commit as the newly crowned Unduk Ngadau.
"I will focus on empowering Sabah's unique cultures, such as traditional music and handicrafts.
"I will do my best to carry out my duty," said Carol, who is currently looking for a job.
