KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) once again demonstrated its commitment to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by securing its position in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023.
This marks the fourth consecutive year of UiTM's recognition in these rankings, which assess institutions' contributions to society and the achievement of the UN's 17 SDGs.
UiTM maintains its strong position among 1,591 ranked institutions worldwide, occupying the 101-200 range with an impressive overall score of 85.9, showcasing notable progress from last year's 82.8.
Locally, UiTM remains one of Malaysia's top-ranking universities, sharing the second spot with Universiti Malaya and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
Participating in eight SDGs this year, UiTM has witnessed improved scores in most categories compared to the previous year.
Notably, UiTM ranks among the top 50 universities worldwide in three SDGs: Partnership for the Goals (SDG17), Gender Equality (SDG5), and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG16).
The university also ranks within the top 100 globally for Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG7), Quality Education (SDG4), and No Poverty (SDG1).
UiTM's progress in promoting Gender Equality is particularly noteworthy, with a significant jump of 18 places, securing the 33rd position globally, up from the previous rank of 51.
UiTM's debut participation in Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG16) also resulted in an impressive 38th position worldwide.
The university's commitment to collaboration is evident as it ranks 25th globally in Partnership for the Goals (SDG17), an improvement of 17 places from the previous year.
UiTM also expanded its participation to include Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG3) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG11) for the first time this year.
UiTM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor said: "As a university, we support the SDGs in four ways: through teaching, research, stewardship, and outreach.
"Our performance in THE Impact Rankings reflects our initiatives towards supporting the SDGs, as well as upholding Malaysia Madani's commitment to sustainability and prosperity," she added.
UiTM's consistently strong performance in THE Impact Rankings demonstrates the university's unwavering dedication to positively impacting society and promoting sustainable development.
