Dr Mahathir denies insulting royal institution

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has denied questioning or insulting the royal institution.

The former prime minister said his recent comments that were subjected to police investigations were merely stories about the old Malay rulers and not the current royal institution.

"This is common knowledge. Can't I talk about it?

"There are two cases (the issue of contempt for royal institutions and the Malay proclamation)... I touched on the Malay rulers in the past. How the institution in question has no money, there is tax collection. I relate to what had happened, which everyone knows.

"Everyone knows about the land sale worth RM4 billion, and I even met with the party who bought the land. The land remains his property until the afterlife," he said in a press conference after the Malay Proclamation Round Table Meeting.

Earlier on June 3, police wrapped up the investigation paper on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over his alleged insult of the royal institution.

Police secretary, Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin, said the investigation paper was reported to be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers today (June 6).

"Police have completed the investigation paper on Tun Dr Mahathir concerning the alleged insult of the royal institution.

"The paper will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers on June 6, 2023 (Tuesday), in line with the provision under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution," she said in a statement.
