KUALA LUMPUR: The widow of a MH370 crew member has slammed stand-up comedian Jocelyn Chia for her insensitive and tasteless jokes about the missing Malaysia Airlines flight.
Intan Maizura Othaman said in a video posted on her Instagram account that her son still cried for his father, and criticised the comedian for turning it into a joke.
"My son Muhammad is still crying over his lost papa, and here you are, having the audacity to make fun of MH370.
"This is truly not funny. No matter how evil you are, you don't mention anything about MH370 or make fun of it."
Intan said the comedian should not have made the joke as a form of validation.
"Having a heart and living in a developing country is so much better compared to your so-called first world country and being a heinous human being.
"Can we stop normalising by doing all the stupid stunts to get validation from people? It is bad, tasteless, (you should) be a better woman."
Several netizens also took to the comment section to support Intan.
One user @helosyah_ said: "I'm sorry for this. I don't know her as a Singaporean, and I definitely don't stand with her. It's not sensible, rude and heartless. Please know there are so many of us still praying for the loss of your loved ones."
Another user @yideekeee commented: "I love comedy and like to watch stand-up comedy, but please be mindful, don't make a joke with a sensitive issue. Hopefully, she will not experience the loss that MH370 and MH17 families and friends experienced.. and hopefully, she is not coming to Johor Baru to fuel up her car."
Yesterday, the Singaporean comedian's 89-second video clip drew flak from netizens after she joked about, among others, the Malaysia Airlines flight that vanished on March 8, 2014, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon also expressed dismay at the "gratuitously offensive comments" made by the performer.
