GEORGE TOWN: Penang's residential and commercial buildings will be affixed with the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) smart electric meter.
The exercise, beginning this month, is expected to be completed in the end of next year.
State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the exercise in Penang would begin on Thursday (June 15) in Pulau Tikus before being expanded statewide.
"The smart meter is an energy sustainability initiative.
"This project is also fully monitored by the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) Ministry, through the Energy Commission, to realise the net zero carbon emission target by 2050," he told newsmen today.
It was previously reported that nine million households across Peninsular Malaysia are expected to be equipped with the TNB smart electric meter by 2026.
The smart meter installation is free of charge, without the need to apply for it.
TNB technicians and vendors will install the device.
Zairil said when the installation works were being done, there would be power disruption between 30 minutes and one hour.
"Each of the unit owners will be served with a smart meter installation notice and a service disruption notice before work is carried out," he said.
A smart meter is an electronic device that records electricity consumption and communicates the information to TNB for monitoring and billing.
