SESB to roll out smart meters in Sabah, Labuan

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will introduce new technology to enhance the quality of electricity supply for users in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan. The move is part of SESB's ongoing efforts to upgrade and improve its services.

SESB chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the company will implement smart meters, which will enable consumers to use electricity more efficiently while helping them save energy.

"With the introduction of smart meters, consumers will be able to plan their monthly electricity usage and set a limit.

"They will receive notifications when their monthly bill reaches a set target," he said in a media statement.

He added that the new features align with SESB's commitment to supporting the government's goal of empowering the digital economy for the benefit of the people.

Phase 1 of the smart meter installation process will involve 6,497 units, targeting large power consumers and feed-in-tariff account holders.

A two-month trial will see 60 units installed for selected users to ensure smooth billing operations before rolling out the remaining units.

"Phase 2, scheduled for 2025, will focus on domestic users in Kota Kinabalu and Labuan, in line with the themes of 'KK Smart City' and 'WP Labuan Smart Island'," he said.
