Disabled sister takes on role of caring for sibling with stage four cancer

ALOR STAR: In a heartrending turn of events, Rohayu Saleh, 44, finds herself at the receiving end of care, despite being the able-bodied sibling.

Her sister, Siti Zaleha Saleh, 49, who has disabilities including speech and hearing impairments, has taken on the role of caregiver after Rohayu was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer.

The sisters now reside in the home of a relative in Taman Kebun Villa, Bukit Pinang. This arrangement allows for easier transportation to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), where Rohayu undergoes treatment.

"It is my sister who tends to my needs day and night, despite of her own challenges. We communicate through sign language," Rohayu said.

Rohayu's battle with colon cancer has taken a toll on her physical abilities, rendering her unable to walk. She now relies on her sister for tasks such as taking her to the bathroom, combing her hair, and feeding her meals. Their lives have taken a drastic turn since their days in Kampung Baru Nami, Sik, where they ran a modest business selling cakes, supporting their two brothers.

"Since falling ill, I have solely depended on the monthly assistance of RM450 from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) that my sister receives to cover the costs of specialized formula milk and hospital visits," Rohayu laments.

The absence of their mother, who passed away 22 years ago, coupled with their father's remarriage, has left the sisters to navigate life's challenges on their own.

Rohayu recalls her diagnosis with colon cancer last year, which followed persistent lower abdominal pain initially mistaken for gastric discomfort.

After undergoing further examinations and treatment at HSB, it was discovered that the stage four colon cancer had spread within Rohayu's body. From her previous weight of 48 kilograms (kg), she now weighs a mere 37 kgs. The cost of specialized formula milk forces her to ration its consumption.

With an indomitable spirit, Rohayu expresses a fervent desire to return to her cake-selling business as a way to generate income to cover her medical expenses. She dreams of self-reliance and a path towards reclaiming her life from the clutches of illness.

To support Rohayu's journey, generous individuals may make donations to the Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) account 0211541000076573 or contact 013-8475166.

Zuraini Kamal, Chairman of Cancer Survivors Malaysia (CSM), has paid a visit to Rohayu, presenting her with a patient bed, monetary assistance, specialized formula milk, and essential kitchen items. Furthermore, a wheelchair was gifted to Rohayu, easing her mobility within her home.
