Info leaks at Wisma Putra over Malaysia-Indonesia border issue under probe, says Home minister

PUTRAJAYA: Police are investigating information leakage pertaining to the Malaysia-Indonesia border issue in Wisma Putra, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The home minister, in a media interview yesterday, said Wisma Putra had made a police report on the incident, prompting the investigation.

Meanwhile, commenting on claims that the government is compromising on the country's sovereignty through the maritime border treaties signed with Indonesia recently, Saifuddin said the issue has been addressed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament.

"The border issue is not a new effort, it has been there for 18 years.

"The most important thing is that the prime minister has mentioned the matters that have been agreed on.

"Meanwhile, matters that were not part of the agreement, such as Pulau Sebatik in Sabah and the three nautical miles outside of the Johor region, were not signed.

"We also told Indonesia that we do not agree (with these disputes), hence this is why we did not sign.

"However, the opposition has translated the agreement as compromising (the sovereignty of the country). That is not the case," he said.

Saifuddin added that it was impossible for the government to ignore the views of experts in its decision to sign the treaties that involve the country's borders and sovereignty.

Anwar was reported as saying in the Dewan Rakyat recently that the country's sovereignty would continue to be protected following the signing of the treaties with Indonesia.

He gave assurance that the question of "being compromised" did not arise as the treaties only involved maritime borders agreed to by both parties and not those under dispute, such as Pulau Sebatik in Sabah.
