Tiong issue to be discussed in cabinet meeting

KUCHING: The issue involving Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and the Immigration Department will be discussed in Wednesday's cabinet meeting.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he was confident the issue can be resolved, after speaking with Tiong himself.

He said he would next speak with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, under whose purview the Immigration Department falls.

"I think we can have a win-win situation and the issue can be resolved... we will bring the matter to the cabinet for discussion on Wednesday," he told reporters after a meeting for the coordination of projects under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry here.

Zahid said Tiong would explain what had happened during the cabinet meeting.

On Thursday, a video clip of Tiong confronting an Immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport went viral after the minister entered the arrival hall.

Confirming later that the man in the clip had indeed been him, Tiong had said he had received a complaint that a woman from China was being held there, allegedly because she was asked to pay a certain amount of money to be allowed to enter the country.

He had said his intentions were to expose the "culture of corruption" among certain Immigration officers at KLIA.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh later said the department had begun investigations into the incident while the Home Ministry said it would wait for a report on the incident before deciding on how to proceed.
