KUALA LUMPUR: The recent noticeable transformation in the appearance of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been attributed to a double eyelid surgery, according to a party member.
Rafi Awg Kechik, a contender for a position in Umno's Supreme Council during the previous party polls, disclosed that he observed "laser marks" on Zahid's face when he recently met the deputy prime minister.
Rafi stated that Zahid informed him about undergoing a double eyelid surgery on both eyes to address the issue of excessive skin, which reportedly covered up to 70 per cent of his eyes.
He further explained that the removal of the excess skin was necessary to avoid potential complications.
"If the excess skin was not removed, there would have been a risk of other complications," Rafi revealed in a Facebook post.
Rafi clarified that Zahid had no choice but to undergo the surgery and added that the effects of the medication had not yet subsided.
Photos showcasing Zahid's altered appearance quickly spread across social media platforms, with noticeable swelling around his eyes.
The rural and regional development minister was also seen wearing sunglasses at recent events he attended.
According to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Zahid had been on a two-week vacation before the noticeable changes in his appearance became apparent.
