GEORGE TOWN: Yesterday's meeting between Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to establish cooperation on the Malay Proclamation movement is a marriage of convenience to destabilise the unity government, says senior DAP leader Dr P. Ramasamy.
Ramasamy said that after mooting the idea of Malay Proclamation, Dr Mahathir recently talked about DAP's subversion of the Federal Constitution by promoting multi-racialism.
Dr Mahathir also criticised Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for being a puppet of the DAP by virtue of the latter's control of 40 seats in Parliament, said Ramasamy.
Hardly had that controversy been over when Dr Mahathir met Muhyiddin to get support for his Malay Proclamation, he added.
"Earlier he had met Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, one of the key persons behind the Sheraton Move. Following the Sheraton Move, Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin drifted apart.
"I suppose the impending state elections have brought them together.
"Both Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin are political desperados, they just cannot wait to topple Anwar from power.
"You name it, Dr Mahathir will go the extreme end to destabilise the unity government headed by Anwar. It might be the Malay Proclamation, multi-racialism as an affront to the Federal Constitution and about the evil designs of the DAP in subverting Malay hegemony and others.
"Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin have their differences, however, the idea of bringing down the legitimate government is too enticing to be ignored," he said today.
Ramasamy said the Malay Proclamation was all about delegitimising the elected government of Anwar, and had nothing to do with fighting for the Malays.
He said Dr Mahathir, who was twice the prime minister, should direct the question as to why the Malays were losing out to others in the country.
"The ordinary Malays might not have benefited, but his family members and cronies reaped handsome economic and financial benefits.
"Muhyiddin is no saint either. His PN government, formed after the illegal Sheraton Move, did nothing to assist the Malays.
"He should be asking himself as to what he did for the Malays when he was in power.
"At present, he is facing corruption and money laundering charges over alleged diverting of funds meant for the eradication of Covid-19.
"Dr Mahathir, Muhyiddin... are hypocrites, who will say one thing, but act in another way. These individuals have to answer as to why they never lifted a finger to assist the poor and ordinary Malays when they had the power and means to do something meaningful for the Malays," he added.
According to Ramasamy, Dr Mahathir's extreme racism seemed to be timed well for the impending six state elections.
"Basically, he wants to bring down the government of Anwar.
"To do this, he willingly wants to have a pact with PN leaders to bring down Anwar.
"Their differences are put aside for the sole nefarious purpose of undermining and subverting the unity government headed by Anwar," he said.
It was reported that Dr Mahathir met Muhyiddin last night to establish cooperation on the Malay Proclamation movement.
It is understood that the meeting lasted for nearly two hours at Dr Mahathir's residence in Kuala Lumpur.
The meeting is believed to be the first since the Sheraton Move in February 2020, which resulted in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government led by Dr Mahathir before Muhyiddin took over as premier.
