Anwar: We know that 'these groups' will collude to continue their ways and defend their wealth

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today alluded that the Malay Proclamation movement by several political leaders were predictable and there was no surprise to such movement.

Anwar, who is Pakatan Harapan chairman also remained calm when asked whether the movement will affect the coalition's pact with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the upcoming six state polls in August.

"This is not a new thing (on doing such move). We know that these groups will collude to continue their ways and defend their wealth.

"However, we (the government) will still be responsble in defending and protecting the country and people's wellbeing," he said when met by reporters after the 2023 International Social Wellbeing Conference, today.

On Tuesday, former prime ministers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin met for the first time since the Sheraton Move in February 2022 at Dr Mahathir's residence.

The meeting, which reportedly lasted around two hours, was also attended by the Secretariat of Malay Proclamation chairman Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan.

Muhyiddin, however, in a statement yesterday said the face-to-face meeting with Dr Mahathir did not touch on the Malay Proclamation movement.

He added that both Dr Mahathir and himself were instead discussing on ways to strengthen the unity of the Malays and increase the support for Perikatan Nasional ahead of the state elections set for next month.

Previously, several PN leaders, including Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, had signed the Malay Proclamation in their personal capacity.

Muhyiddin and Hadi have expressed their willingness to collaborate with Dr Mahathir in order to foster unity among the Malay-Muslim community.
