Search for missing boy expanded up to 10km

HULU SELANGOR: The search and rescue (SAR) area for seven year-old boy, who slipped and fell into a river while trying to retrieve his pair of slippers has been expanded in its third day.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Services Department assistant director of operations, Mohamadul Ehsan Mohd Zain said the search was expanded to cover a 10km radius from where Ahmad Ammar Akhtar Tajul Azwa was said to have gone missing on Wednesday.

He said the SAR was carried out until 11pm last night (July 6) and resumed this morning at 7am.

"Earlier, the operation was carried out using the water surface searching method or heading down the river technique until the Batang Kali bridge. This covered a 3km distance."

"At 2pm yesterday, the search was expanded and personnel were divided into two teams with five boats and a K9 tracker dog unit to cover Sungai Selangor.

"Monitoring is also being done at rubbish traps by personnel from the Bukit Sentosa and Bestari Jaya fire and rescue stations," he said in a statement last night (July 6).

Mohamadul said 15 officers and personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department are involved in the SAR operation, including from the department's Water Rescue Team (PPDA).

Also involved are four firemen with two dogs from the K9 tracker dog unit.

It was reported that the boy was trying to reach his pair of slippers which were placed at the river bank , and was swept away by strong currents in the incident at Desa Alam Ria near Batang Kali.

The Fire and Rescue department had said a team was deployed at 7.30pm on Wednesday.
