Filing fresh police report will enable probe under new anti-stalking law: Nancy tells victim of stalker

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri wants the local female photographer who claimed to be the victim of a stalker to file a new police report in order for investigations to be conducted under the new anti-stalking law.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said this was in view of the enforcement of the new Section 507A in the Penal Code for the offence of stalking in April.

Nancy said a new report would strengthen the photographers' claims after she made her first police report in 2018.

"She should lodge a new police report so that action can be taken.

"Section 507A was only approved in April this year. So, she has to start afresh.

"If it (the offence) is stalking, then action can be taken under Section 507A," Nancy told the New Straits Times today.

Anyone found guilty of the offence is liable to a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment or a fine or both.

NST reported the predicament of the victim @Acacia Diana who went on Instagram and Twitter to expose the years of cyber sexual harassment on top of relentless stalking.

She claimed that in 2016, the stalker began harassing her by leaving comments on her blog, including lewd contents.

The stalker, she added, had also introduced himself to her while at a fast food restaurant, adding that he had known her through Instagram, and had even gone to her house.

This happened despite numerous attempts from her side telling him to stop harassing her.

The stalker had created over 30 social media accounts over the years where he had used the accounts to harass her.

The situation escalated when the stalker followed her to London and that the United Kingdom (UK) authorities had arrested.

He was slapped with harassment-related charges in court but he had fled the UK and had not had his day in court.
