TUMPAT: The low turnout rate in Kelantan this morning could be due to youngster voters choosing to cast their votes later in the day.
A state Election Commission (EC) worker at SMK Kampung Laut polling centre said since the morning, mostly elderly voters were seen thronging the polling centre.
"At the SMK Kampung Laut polling centre, which opened at 8am, there have only been senior citizens and people with disability voters seen fulfilling their responsibility.
"As of 11am, there were more than 1,000 voters who had arrived at the centre. The young voters are still sleeping because they have been campaigning until midnight last night," said the EC worker.
He said more than 3,000 voters were registered to cast their ballot at the same polling centre.
Checks at polling centre showed that most of the counters were still empty with only a few voters spotted lining up for registration.
It was reported that the voter turnout rate in Kelantan was the lowest in the morning at only 17 per cent at 10am.
However, the voter turnout in Kelantan increased to 34 per cent by noon.
