KUALA LUMPUR: From Wangsa Maju to London, with eyes on Paris and New York.
A Malaysian banker turned baker has recently launched his second cake boutique in London after achieving success and fame from his cakes.
The founder of the Banker2baker cake business, Zulkiflee Mawan has stated that the London branch is an initial step towards expanding his cake business in Paris and New York in the future.
Zulkiflee who had opened his first cake boutique in Wangsa Maju is known for his extravagant cakes and had received recognition from prominent clients including royalties, socialites, politicians and also celebrities.
He mentioned that it is a challenge to stay relevant in the market but by continuously introducing new and interesting designs for his client, it is achievable. He disclosed that feedback from his European customers has been very welcoming.
"I believe that the London branch is in good hands, we have an A-team trained by Banker2baker KL and some of our most experienced and skilled staff are there," he explained, adding that he will assist the London branch from time to time.
Zulkiflee, who had zero background in baking or culinary, made it his personal task to gain knowledge regarding cake making at international and local cake artistry centres.
Although the decision to run a cake business started when he was at the age of 50, he has proven that with hard work and dedication, dreams can still be accomplished regardless of what age you are.
Recently, he received cake orders for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and his wife on separate occasions.
"It was a challenging experience when His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen had requested cake orders. Usually, we are asked to propose designs for our clients' perusal. This part of the process is quite lengthy as we strive for the best quality and ensure that the design is unique," he told an entertainment portal.
Zulkiflee stated that he likes to give his cake a personal touch related to his clients.
"The cakes that we have created have been inspired by the clients themselves, if you notice that the cakes for His and Her royal highness were designed to look like their regalia such as Muskat, royal headdress, tiara and necklace," he explained emphasising that his clients' satisfaction is the primary objective for his business.
