Police await further info on espionage in Norway

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are awaiting further details on the alleged espionage by a Malaysian who was detained in Oslo, Norway, recently.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain had briefed him yesterday on the case including the background of the man.

"The Norwegian authorities have already notified us and our duty is to verify the details.

"We will use the right instruments to deal with the issue, espionage is a sensitive matter.

"Any outcome will be passed to Foreign Ministry to respond to the Norwegian authorities," he said when he met the press after attending the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2023 at Dorsett Putrajaya Hotel here today.

A 25-year-old Malaysian student in Norway has been detained by local authorities for alleged espionage, including illegal eavesdropping through various technical devices.

Norwegian police intelligence agency, known as PST, has charged the man with spying on the prime minister's office, defence ministry, and other government offices in Oslo, Norway's media reported.

The Foreign Ministry has confirmed the arrest of a Malaysian in Oslo.
