JOHOR BARU: To alleviate persistent border congestion problems, a trial run to evaluate the proposed contra-flow lanes at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) will take place next week.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi addressed the ongoing traffic congestion issues, highlighting that despite various measures implemented, the problem still persists. As a result, the introduction of contra-flow lanes has become necessary.
He stated: "A dry-run will be conducted next week," and emphasised that complaints about congestion typically surge during weekends, as well as school and public holidays.
"To ensure a more comfortable experience for the hundreds of thousands of travellers entering and leaving Johor, I have requested the CIQ management in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) to open dedicated contra lanes for pedestrians and public transport users."
In July this year, the menteri besar proposed contra-flow lanes to ease traffic congestion.
The implementation method was studied and refined by the Home Ministry and the Immigration Department.
Upon implementation, the contra-flow lanes will be activated for pedestrians and bus users during certain periods, such as school and public holidays.
He urged all involved agencies to work closely together to ensure that traffic flow in both directions (inbound and outbound) is optimal and that they will always be prepared for any unexpected increase in traffic.
To overcome the unusual congestion, the Johor government recommended activating contra-flow lanes for travellers using the walkway and public transport during school holidays or lengthy holidays.
