Foreign Ministry in contact with 5 Malaysians in West Bank

KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) today said five Malaysians; a woman and a mother with three children, are currently in the West Bank.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said the Malaysian Embassy in Amman, Jordan was in contact with them.

"Anyone who has information about the whereabouts of relatives or acquaintances in conflict areas are encouraged to get in touch with the ministry for assistance." it said.

The ministry also advised members of the public to postpone travel plans to the affected areas due to the heightened security situation.

"Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that still intend to visit the area are advised to consult with the ministry in advance," it said.

Wisma Putra added that Malaysia denounced Israel's indiscriminate and capricious airstrikes targeting civilian regions in the ongoing Palestinian conflict.

"Malaysia strongly condemns Israel's indiscriminate and arbitrary bombings of civilian areas, as well as the regime's actions to block basic supplies of water, electricity, and food."

Meanwhile, Wisma Putra acknowledged parliament's unanimous resolution in calling for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the international community to pressure for an immediate ceasefire.

"Malaysia is also deeply disappointed by the failure of the UNSC to reach an agreement on this matter," said the ministry.

It said Malaysia was aiming to provide one million ringgit as an emergency fund to aid the affected while urging the international community to promptly deliver humanitarian assistance such as basic supplies and medical aid.

"The Israeli regime has no right to obstruct humanitarian aid channels.

"As an initial step, the ministry is in the process of immediately channelling RM1 million for early humanitarian assistance through the People's Humanitarian Trust Account for Palestine (AAKRP)," said the ministry while welcoming all to contribute to the fund.

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia remains firm and steadfast in its stand, and the government's foreign policy would continue to prioritise the struggle to liberate Palestine land and its people.

The recent clashes in Palestine involving Hamas and the Israeli regime have resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives on both sides since Saturday, Oct 7.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Tuesday that the recent escalation in the Israel-Palestine conflict had led to the displacement of nearly 150,000 people in the Gaza Strip.
