Pahang govt "surprised' over plans for toll plaza in Genting

BENTONG: Plans to introduce a one-way trip toll charge for those travelling to popular hilltop resort Genting Highlands seems to have caught the Pahang government by surprise.

State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said the matter had never been raised or discussed during the state executive council meeting.

"There is nothing official yet about the news reports. We (state government) have never discussed the proposed toll.

"I am gathering further details on the matter. Let me get more information about it first," she said when contacted today.

Meanwhile, Pahang Public Works, Transport and Health Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff said he was unsure about the reports and was in the midst of getting confirmation.

A Chinese daily had reported that motorists travelling to Genting Highlands will soon have to pay toll charges and Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, which is in charge of maintaining the roadworks in Genting, will manage the toll's operations.

A Lingkaran Cekap spokesman was reported as saying drivers only need to pay once when travelling up to Genting and more discussions will be held before an announcement is made.

Social media has been abuzz with images claiming to be gantry structure for the construction of the toll plazas with some claiming it was more like an entrance fee collection booth while some raised concerns if the charges will be a burden and impact visitors arrival.
