KUALA LUMPUR: Palestinian Donya Abu Mohsen, 12, saw her world flip upside down after an Israeli rocket destroyed the home she shared with her family in Gaza.
In the tragedy, she lost her parents and two of her siblings, in addition to her limb.
"We were sleeping, then woke up, my father, my sister and myself. My mother was with my brother.
"The second missile hit our house and the whole place was full of chaos. We were all injured. Dust and bricks were all over the place.
"My mother and father lost their lives together with my sister and my younger brother. My other brother and sister and I escaped death," said Donya in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Donya is currently under the care of her aunt, Fadwa Abu Mohsen, who expressed that she had always regarded Donya as her own daughter.
"I give Donya everything and whatever she wants, I do it. In the presence of her mom and dad or in their absence.
"I am her mother and I am the one who will bring her up," said Fadwa.
In the face of hardship and losses, Donya resolves to persevere and hopes to become a doctor when she grows up.
She also conveyed her sense of being deeply connected to life through her recently departed family members.
