KUALA LUMPUR: The roti canai has once again gained global recognition, ranking as the second-best dish in the world.
Experiential travel guide for traditional food TasteAtlas placed the popular Malaysian breakfast dish in second place in their 100 Best Dishes in The World Awards 23/24.
They also named restaurants Nasi Kandar Pelita, Tg's Nasi Kandar, and Sri Nirwana Maju for places with the "most iconic" roti canai.
The flaky flatbread is only one spot behind 'picanha,' a type of Brazilian beef cut that topped the chart this year.
Roti canai is a pan-dried flatbread commonly eaten for breakfast and is made with flour, water, and eggs.
The dough is folded several times to create layers, resulting in a soft, fluffy texture on the inside and a crispy outer layer.
Famed for its versatility, the roti canai can be eaten with a number of "dips ", including curry, chutney, sambal, dhal, or even condensed milk.
Some even prefer their roti canai with bananas, eggs, and onions, among others.
In third place is a stir-fry dish called 'phat kaphrao' from Thailand, followed by pizza napoletana from Italy, and 'guotie' dumplings from China in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
The roti canai is also ahead of India's famed butter garlic naan and other dishes, such as the Vietnamese sandwich 'banh mi thit' and 'tonkatsu ramen' from Japan.
In September, TasteAtlas had also ranked roti canai as the world's best bread. It beat 49 other types of bread to be crowned the 'Best Bread in the World'.
