Anwar: ICJ decision on Gaza reflects condemnation of Israeli attacks, calls for humanitarian aid

KUALA LUMPUR: The International Court of Justice's decision over the crisis in Gaza is a clear stance of condemning the cruel attacks by Israeli forces against the oppressed Palestinians, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

The Prime Minister, nevertheless, is aware that such a decision did not meet the hopes of Palestinians for a complete end to the attacks on Gaza.

"Although according to 'teman-teman' (brothers and sisters) in Palestine it (the ICJ's decision) did not completely provide (an end to the war in Gaza), the decision, however, is a clear stance by ICJ condemning such attack.

"The decision by ICJ is also a clear call for humanitarian aid to be expedited (for Palestinians).

"Like what was said by the Foreign Minister (Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan) during the 'United Nations Security Council Open Debate On The Situation in The Middle East Including Palestinian Question' in New York recently, Malaysia will continue to monitor the situation in Gaza.

"We will continue to provide the necessary support (for the people of Palestine)," he told reporters here today.

Reuters reported that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians and to do more to help civilians.

The world court however stopped short of ordering a ceasefire as requested by the plaintiff, South Africa.

The report said that although such a ruling denied Palestinian hopes of a binding order to halt the war in Gaza, Hamas, nevertheless, said the ruling was an important development that contributed to isolating Israel and exposing its crimes in Gaza.

It was reported last month that South Africa launched an application with the ICJ to investigate alleged acts of genocide committed by Israel in Gaza.

South Africa, which has been a supporter of the Palestinian cause for decades, in the application also pushed for a declaration on an urgent basis that Israel is in breach of its obligations in terms of the 1948 Genocide Convention.

It also requested the court to ask Israel to immediately cease all acts and measures in breach of the obligations.
