BARAM: In a significant move to boost the economic prospects of the Penan community in Kampung Long Leng, a total of 405 durian saplings of the D200 and D168 varieties were distributed to the residents on Feb 4.
A report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit revealed that each of the 45 doors of the village's longhouse received nine durian saplings, intended to be planted on their respective lands. This initiative is not just about planting trees; it's about sowing the seeds of economic empowerment for the Penan community.
"The project, spearheaded by Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau, represents a concerted effort to bolster the local economy through agricultural engagement.
"Recognising the lucrative potential of durian cultivation, Dato Ngau has taken a keen interest in equipping the Penan residents with the resources to tap into this market," the report said.
Durian, often referred to as the 'King of Fruits', is renowned not only for its distinctive taste and aroma but also for its economic value.
With the correct agricultural practices and diligent care, durian trees can become a sustainable source of income for local farmers.
Ngau added that in the long run, if the durians are cultivated properly, they could yield substantial earnings for the community.
