Sri Sabah Flats fire an eye-opener for authorities, says Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: The fire that engulfed the 17th-floor low-cost flats in the Sri Sabah Flats in Cheras on Sunday night should serve as an eye-opener to the authorities, said the Alliance for a Safe Community.

Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said it was fortunate that no lives were lost, but given the fact that the flats were built 40 years ago and that many of them lacked proper firefighting equipment, the residents may not be so lucky the next time.

"There have been many cases of vandalism, where the risers installed on every floor have been ripped off and not replaced.

"Therefore, it is imperative for the authorities to make frequent checks to ensure that these risers are replaced and are always in good order," he said in a statement.

Lee said the authorities should provide more risers, smoke alarms and sprinklers for extra protection.

He said residents should play a pivotal role in their own safety.

"Regular drills, workshops and informational sessions can empower them to respond effectively in case of an emergency.

"Implementing educational programmes within the communities is paramount. They must know how to use fire extinguishers properly, and understand why they should not overload the electrical circuits in the flats," he said, adding that each unit could be supplied with 3kg fire extinguishers to fight small fires that could start in the kitchens.

He said partnerships between local authorities, non-governmental organisations and residents' associations could lead to more comprehensive fire safety plans.

"Such collaborations can facilitate the sharing of resources, expertise and the development of effective emergency response strategies.

"The authorities and residents must be proactive."

On Sunday night, five out of six units on the 17th floor of the the Sri Sabah Flats caugh fire.

The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 9.19pm and controlled the fire at 11.22pm.

No casualties or injuries were reported.
