KUALA LUMPUR: With a lineage deeply rooted in the artistry of makeup, Brriyan John, a talented Malaysian makeup artist, has carved out a prominent place for himself on the global stage, earning the esteemed privilege of working backstage at an internationally renowned pageant.
Hailing from Skudai, Johor Bahru, the 30-year-old Brriyan's journey to prominence commenced when he was entrusted with the role of makeup artist for the current titleholder of Mrs Malaysia World 2023, P. Vanishaantini, 27, at the prestigious Mrs World Pageant 2023 held in Las Vegas, United States, last month.
"It was exhilarating to not only serve as Mrs Malaysia World's makeup artist but also as her stylist, curating two distinctive looks daily over eight days. The intricate planning spanned nearly two months, with designers meticulously crafting outfits from scratch," he told Bernama in an exclusive interview at Wisma Bernama.
Additionally, Brriyan received a remarkable request from former Mrs World, Sargam Koushal of India, further solidifying his presence on the global stage.
Navigating the demanding pace of the pageant circuit, Brriyan's tenure as a film makeup artist in Malaysian Tamil cinema, notably in the 2019 production "Ennaval," equipped him for the fast-paced environment.
Collaborating with local Indian actors like C. Kumaresan and Sangeeta Krishnasamy further fortified his expertise.
He said one of the most challenging parts of the pageant journey was bringing the award-winning traditional wau kite-inspired costume to Las Vegas and assembling it there.
"We had issues with immigration there whereby we had to bring it back to Malaysia, break it into smaller pieces to be able to bring it to Las Vegas and assemble it as they did not allow the previous size of the costume," he said, adding that it took a whole night for him and Vanishaantini's family to assemble back the costume.
Besides that, throughout his experience in Las Vegas, Brriyan said that local makeup artists should be given more appreciation for the art they create, comparing how great people like him were seen, treated, and valued at the international pageant.
Reflecting on the broader landscape of local makeup artists, Brriyan advocated for greater recognition, citing the disparity between the limelight accorded to actors and the relative obscurity of makeup artisans.
Looking ahead, Brriyan aspires to share his expertise through international makeup masterclasses, aspiring to elevate the craft globally. He remains open to future participation in international beauty pageants, eager to expand his repertoire and skills.
Recalling his humble beginnings and the initial skepticism he faced, Brriyan emphasised the transformative power of hard work and passion. Despite early setbacks, he now strides alongside his detractors, a testament to perseverance and resilience.
Encouraging his peers to diversify their skill sets beyond bridal makeup, Brriyan advocates for specialisation in special effects, film, and editorial makeup to enhance competitiveness and viability in the industry.
Transitioning from a background in physiotherapy to pursue his true calling, Brriyan's portfolio boasts collaborations with local Tamil and Malay celebrities, as well as renowned Indian actors including Sonia Agarwal, Ineya, and Mahima Nambiar, signalling a remarkable ascent in the realm of makeup artistry. – BERNAMA
