KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Cambodia have agreed to explore new flight routes to expand air connectivity and subsequently boost the tourism sector in both countries.
This was among several areas deliberated and agreed upon during a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet, which took place at the Perdana Putra building in Putrajaya near here today.
According to Anwar, there are currently 47 flights between Kuala Lumpur and Cambodia per week.
"On the suggestion of the Cambodian Prime Minister, we have agreed to look into new routes to expand this (air connectivity between Malaysia and Cambodia) since there is huge potential in both countries," said Anwar during a joint press conference with Hun Manet.
The joint press conference was held in conjunction with Hun Manet's first official visit to Malaysia after he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Cambodia in August last year.
Hun Manet's agreement to explore more flight routes reflected the commitment by Cambodia and Malaysia not only to expand air connectivity but also to stimulate the tourism sector for both countries.
"We recognised the importance of enhancing (air) connectivity (between Malaysia and Cambodia). We discussed the possibility of collaboration further in terms of tourism and facilitation of additional direct flights.
"As mentioned by Prime Minister (Anwar), this is specifically for more destinations between our two countries to enable visits between our two peoples as well as visitors from the countries between our two countries," Hun Manet said.
